GSM is grams per square metre. It is a mass, and that is all it is. A long loose loop and a short dense loop can weigh exactly the same and behave completely differently the moment they are wet.
So we quote the loop as well as the weight: how long it is, how densely it is set, and what the yarn is. That is the pair of numbers that actually predicts how a robe feels on day one and whether it still feels that way after two hundred industrial washes.
The third number, and the one that causes the most arguments, is the post-wash length. Cotton terry shrinks the first time it is laundered industrially, so a robe has to be cut oversized to land on the size you ordered.
Why we exist
This is a category bought on a single number and judged on a laundry cycle count.
A robe quoted at a headline GSM with no loop specification can be any of three quite different garments. A robe quoted at pre-wash dimensions arrives a size smaller than the one on the order. Belt loops tacked to the surface pull off. Velour sold as more absorbent than terry is the exact opposite of the truth. And microfibre washed with softener holds odour and gets blamed on the fibre. We specify around all five, because those are the complaints, and none of them are visible in a photograph.
What we actually make
Cotton terry hotel robes with the loop construction and the post-wash length both on the quote. Light waffle weaves for spas where the laundry, not the guest, is the constraint. Velour-faced robes with the sheared face outside and a working terry loop against the skin. Quick-dry microfibre for gyms and pools, supplied with care guidance because softener is the one thing that ruins it. Children’s robes by age band with no cords at the neck and belt loops sewn through the panel. And individually embroidered guest robes, boxed singly with the name on the box.
Everything is labelled by size and, where it helps, by floor or department, because the person distributing them is never the person who ordered them.
What we will not claim
Velour is not more absorbent than terry. It is terry with the loops sheared off, and the loop was doing the absorbing.
A waffle robe is not a warm robe. The open weave that dries fast is the same open weave that lets heat straight through.
And a bamboo robe is not made of bamboo fibre in the way the name implies — it is almost always regenerated cellulose made from bamboo pulp. It is a pleasant fabric and we will describe it accurately rather than leave the name to do the work.
